More information about Winter Cross Country
The Hamersley winter cross country program aims to provide a well-structured and accessible training program for all Hamersley athletes. The winter cross country race season is operated by Athletics West from April/May until August. Hamersley commences cross country training as a centre-based squad in early April. Training is offered by qualified middle distance coaches with parental support for younger athletes. Parents of registered athletes are encouraged to participate for their own fitness and to provide additional supervision for athletes.
We also have a private Facebook group called “Hamersley Winter XC Squad” for members of Hamersley.
Uniform for Cross Country
Athletes can wear their own clothing for training sessions. When participating in competitions, athletes must compete in the Hamersley uniform – there is an exception for U7 and U8 athletes, who may compete in their Club uniform if they wish to. Winter FAQ’s
What is a Scratch race? Where the event is marked in the calendar as “Scratch”, everyone in the group starts at the same time.
What is a Handicap race? Where an event is marked as “Handicap”, athletes in a group start at different times to each other. The handicaps are worked out via each athletes previous times and will be 30 secs, 1min, 1min 30secs or 2 minutes. The aim is for athletes to finish closer together and not strung out along the course. An athlete’s handicap has no effect on their final time. Handicaps will updated on the LAWA website prior to each Handicap event.
