Weekly Training

Hamersley Athletics Centre kicks off Cross Country training in April each year, forming a centre-based XC squad for athletes from U7 (turning 7 in the current year) through to Senior levels.

🏃 Training Schedule

Thursdays & Sundays
4:30pm – 5:30pm

  • Initial sessions: Lake Gwelup Reserve

  • Following weeks: Monyash Oval, Carine Open Space

Sessions are run by qualified distance coaches who tailor training to suit each athlete’s ability and fitness level. Head Coach Emmett Fenlon will be returning for the 2025 Winter Season.

Community

At Hamersley, athletics is a team effort. We foster a supportive community where parents are encouraged to get involved, cheer from the sidelines, and volunteer track side.

For our younger athletes, parental support is essential to ensure a safe and engaging experience.

Parents are also encouraged to join in the training — a great opportunity to improve your own fitness while staying involved in your child’s journey. Whether you’re jogging alongside or cheering from the sidelines, your presence makes a big impact.

How do I register for Cross Country Competition Events?

Registration for Cross Country events is through the Athletics West website. Each competition has an event specific registration page which will open at least 1 week prior to the scheduled event. Keep an eye on the events calendar and register directly here > Events – Athletics West

What uniform do I need to wear if competing?

When participating in cross country competitions, athletes must compete in the Hamersley Athletics uniform – there is an exception for U7 and U8 athletes, who may compete in their Club uniform if they wish to.

Uniforms can be ordered online via our uniform shop, or second hand through the Facebook page: Hamersley Athletics Centre – Buy, Sell & Swap – Uniforms & Shoes

  • Little Athletics members must wear their numbered bib for all events. Summer registered athletes please continue to wear your existing bib. New members, please contact the Winter Officer following registration.
  • Spiked shoes are NOT permitted to be worn during cross country races.

Do I need to compete in all cross country events?

The cross country events coordinated by Athletics West and hosted by Little Athletics centre will be held at various locations throughout Perth. Each competition has an event specific registration, therefore there is no requirement to compete in all the scheduled events.

How do I access Cross Country Competition results?

Cross Country event results are published to the Athletics West website by the following week post event. All results can be accessed via the Results page > Results – Athletics West. Issues or queries regarding athlete results need to be sent directly to Athletics West.

What amount of parent involvement is needed?

Parents are expected to stay at training and help out as needed to ensure a safe environment for athletes. We also encourage parent participation and have an active parent running group who join in the training with their children. If you’re keen to keep fit over winter, lace up and join your kids in the cross country fun!

Is there a parent volunteer roster?

All athletes who compete in the Athletics West Cross Country events will need to complete one parent roster for the season. Hamersley Athletics Centre will host a cross country meet at Gwelup during the season and will need parent volunteers to help on the day. Volunteer sign up is through the Athletics West event page.
